Paul Sofianos.

UNITED Press Release 08-11-2013-International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism - 9 November 2013

WIPE OUT HATE
Stop hate speech Online

More than 200 coordinated actions are organised by grass-roots organisations and different local groups in 43 European countries.

These local actions are united under the common slogan: "WIPE OUT HATE"

We remember the past, monitor the present and act for the future by:

* Commemorating the Holocaust starting 75 years ago;

* Resisting today's right-wing extremism, extreme nationalism and fascism;

* Raising awareness about the worrying political developments in Europe

An atmosphere of hate is growing in Europe and hate speech and online hate are already a fatal, daily constant.

Europe is facing the growing success of populist and extremist right-wing movements.

By using people’s prejudices, concerns and fears in a time of crisis, populist and extreme right groups are succeeding in most European countries with exclusionist slogans and simple “solutions”.

Extreme right-wing parties are elected into parliaments and xenophobic propaganda is becoming legitimate in societies.

Hate not only leads to violence, discrimination and exclusion, but is a dangerous threat to democracy and peace as well. Europe has been here before: it ended in the Holocaust.

This year's planned actions range from commemorations, debates, demonstrations and symposiums over radio programmes and online-campaigns, up to concerts and film festivals.

Historical background - 75 years after the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom

The 'Kristallnacht' pogrom or 'Night of Broken Glass', was a series of attacks against Jews carried out by SA stormtroopers and civilians in nazi-Germany and Austria, 9-10 November 1938.

It was the first step to the extermination of the Jewish Europeans by the nazis.

Today 9 November is seen as the symbolic beginning of the Holocaust, the policy of the systematic murdering of millions of people.

It reminds us that such terrible things did not start with deportations and concentration camps, but developed step by step.
Quotes from policy makers supporting this campaign:
Jean-Paul Makengo - President of the European Cities Against Racism, Deputy Mayor of Toulouse:
“European people must understand, this must be stopped from ever happening again.”

Erik Ullenhag - Swedish Minister for Integration:
"We all have a responsibility to fight intolerance but of course political leaders have a special responsibility. We need to stand up and take the debate on in order to protect and promote an open society. And the debate must be taken in all areas of society – in real life and on the internet."

Anne-Mari Virolainen - Chair of Committee on Migration, Refugees & Displaced Persons - Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe
“Parliamentarians need to be brave in standing up for positions that may not be popular, especially when it comes to dealing with migrant issues in a time of economic crisis.”

László Földi - No Hate Speech Movement Council of Europe
“Extremism and racism is a logic that has never ended up with peace or happiness, it always resulted in disorder, destruction, war and death. It is easy to make people believe the world is black and white. It is not and it will never be. We must do our utmost to show the consequences of the logic of hate to all around us”

UNITED for Intercultural Action
The campaign is coordinated by 'UNITED for Intercultural Action' - the pan-European network against nationalism, racism, fascism and in support of migrants and refugees. Within the UNITED network more than 550 organisations from a wide variety of backgrounds, from 46 European countries, work together in common activities and projects.

ON THIRD STOP OF SAHEL VISIT,BAN URGES BURKINA FASO TO OFF-SET CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS

New York, Nov  7 2013  3:00PM

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today underscored the importance of preparing for extreme weather patterns in Burkina Faso, which as has much of the Sahel region, been impacted by climate change, and urged national leaders to work with the United Nations and the international community to obtain the necessary resources to mitigate and adapt to the impacts.

“Extreme weather patterns have shown that climate change is fast approaching – much, much faster than one may expect,” Mr. Ban <"http://www.un.org/sg/statements/index.asp?nid=7259"> said ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Luc-Adolphe Tiao.

“The developed world – they have capacity, they have means, they have money to handle this – but you do not,” he stressed, adding that it is only natural that developed nations provide the necessary funding and technology to address this impact.

Praising the Government of President Blaise Compaoré and Prime Minister Tiao, Mr. Ban appealed to the leaders to “to speak out and work together with the United Nations.”

Noting that the country is among those “most impacted” by the changing weather patterns, Mr. Ban also urged a push for the African Union (AU) to champion this cause, “If you are not speaking up, then who will.”

Turning to the two other priorities for the UN and the international community to work on together, Mr. Ban stressed achieving the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) by their 2015 deadline and defining the sustainable development goals which will follow.

The UN Member States have identified 26 such challenges starting with climate change, water scarcity, agricultural problems, energy shortages, gender empowerment, education, urbanization, transportation, and nutrition issues.

“From 2016 to 2030, we have to have a blue print as our leaders will gather at the United Nations in 2015,” Mr. Ban said.

The UN chief, who is on a multi-stop tour of the Sahel along with World Bank Group President Jim Yong and other senior development officials, also reiterated the organizations’ solidarity with the people of the region.

“The region has suffered too much and for too long,” he said.

“We are here to listen and especially to act.
Our message is clear: peace and development must go hand in hand.”

Mr. Ban and Mr. Yong head next to N’djamena, Chad.

Their earlier stops were in Mali and Niger.

The Sahel has suffered three major droughts in less than a decade. More than 11 million people are at risk of hunger and 5 million children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition.

In addition, political instability and unconstitutional changes in Governments have had significant economic and social consequences in the region and terrorist acts, as well as organized crime, have threatened the region’s stability.

UN GOODWILL AMBASSADOR NICOLAS CAGE LENDS SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

New York, Nov  5 2013  6:00PM

Renowned United States actor, filmmaker and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Global Justice Nicolas Cage today called for greater efforts to assist human trafficking victims, stressing the international community cannot “stand quietly on the sidelines” while this scourge persists across the globe.

“As a global society, we cannot tolerate people being bought and sold as commodities.
We cannot fight for a better planet and for the rights of all its beings while we allow our own species to trick, abuse and brutally exploit each other for profit,”
Mr. Cage <"http://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/frontpage/2013/November/unodc-goodwill-ambassador-nicolas-cage-renews-his-appointment.html?ref=fs1">
said at an event in Vienna, Austria, to raise awareness on the issues as well as private funds for victims.

“We cannot stand quietly on the sidelines, while humans are being shipped and traded across the globe,”
he said.

Human trafficking affects every country in the world.
Victims are trafficked for sexual exploitation and forced labour.

A recent UNODC report found that women and girls make up 75 per cent of detected victims, with girls constituting two out of every three child victims.

“A person stripped of their documents, their rights and their dignity needs specialized help.
They need to rebuild their lives brick by brick.
Your contribution tonight can provide vital help to these victims,”
Mr. Cage told the attendees at the event, which was organized by Austrian businessman and philanthropist Ali Rahimi and held under the auspices of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

A specially designed “Blue Heart” carpet – an international symbol increasingly adopted in the fight against human trafficking – was auctioned at the event.

Proceeds from the event will go the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, which supports grassroots organizations that rescue, shelter and reintegrate victims into society.

“Since 2010, $1.5 million have been contributed to the Trust Fund.
Thanks to this money, 11 grass-roots organizations around the world have been able to support victims and survivors of trafficking, especially women and children,”
said
UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov.

“But we need to do more.
We need to join forces – the UN, Governments, NGOs, the private sector, community leaders and ordinary citizens, to stop this terrible crime.
We have a shared responsibility to end this cruel exploitation and abuse of human rights.”

While in Vienna, Mr. Cage, who has starred in more than 60 movies and won an Academy Award for Best Actor in for the film <i>Leaving Las Vegas<i>, renewed his appointment made in 2010 as UNODC Goodwill Ambassador, saying it was a title and position he was
“very proud to hold.
Of all the experiences I have had in my life this has been the most humbling and challenging of responsibilities.”
