STOP THE DETENTION OF AFGHAN REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS IN GREECE AND THEIR ENFORCED DESTITUTION!

Commissioner Malmström,
As Greece
takes over the Presidency of the EU in January 2014
Greece, other Member States and the EU all need to address the humanitarian crisis affecting refugees and migrants there.

The situation in Greece is a humanitarian crisis,
untenable and makes a mockery of any idea of a common space for protection and equality.

We cannot talk about minimum standards of reception in Greece,
where there is no support at all for asylum seekers;
when people are forced to live out of dustbins;

When asylum seekers and migrants found to be crossing the border irregularly,
are now detained in Greece for longer -up to 18 months, in horrendous conditions,
often with no possibility they can be  returned to Afghanistan;

when husbands and fathers are detained,
whilst their wives and children live on the streets,
often literally, with no support; exposed to racist attacks;
when unaccompanied children are treated like criminals.

When the situation in Afghanistan is so unclear and refugees so afraid of return;
when many Afghans who fled to Europe came to escape the Taliban and know what that means.

We are writing to you
as Afghan refugees and migrants and others who believe that someone has to say that enough is enough –Europe cannot go on treating people fleeing persecution and hardship as disposable victims, their only use -
a warning to those who would flee next.
